However, in the standard version of the game the premise is as follows. Get as close to 21 as you can than the dealer to win the game. The values of the cards are

1 or 11 for any ACE

Face value for the numbered cards

10 for Face cards other than Ace (Jack, Queen and King)

So as a basic example you can have 4, 6 and an Ace (4 + 6 + 11 = 21) to win the game. But with 5, 7 and Queen (5 + 7 + 10 = 22) you will lose your hand. The kink in the game is the value of Ace. If you are dealt a 7 and an Ace the face value of your cards is 18 in case you decide to end your game or 8 if you decide to draw more cards. The ace is generally considered as 1 in cases where the players avoid the count to be busted (over 21).

The game typically begins after the bets are placed and you are not allowed to hold your cards with 2 hands.
